Diving In!:)

We had a fantastic time this week diving into our first units. We learned so much already!! Here are a few snapshots from our week...
We started out our Math Unit on Place Value by representing a number with counters or cubes. These are some pictures from their representations...

After spending time representing a two digit number with counters or cubes...we realized a few things... first...there were several different ways the same number can be represented. We also discovered that using base ten blocks makes things a lot easier because you don't have to use the exact number of items that the number is because of ten rods.
The next few days we spent time with base ten blocks and represented a number with those as well as in expanded form, word form, and standard form. Here are some pictures of them building numbers and "turning to teach" their elbow partners...

In Social Studies we began our unit on Communities. After being introduced to a type of community they paired up with a classmate to research that community. They took notes on a T-Chart and then brought their information back to share with the class. Here they are hard at work...

In reading we have been learning about Author's Craft as we have been into our Cynthia Rylant Author Study. In writing we have been learning about what it takes to be a writer and discovering how we can be authors.
On Friday we had a very special guest come visit us! Mrs. Barfield, who is the author of "Sully Bug" along with a few new books set to come out later this year! She shared her experience as an author, where she gets her ideas, and she even read them "Sully Bug"! Thank you Mrs. Barfield for taking your time to come see us!:) Here are some pictures from her special visit...

Friday was College Colors Day and these girls are decked out in their favorite team colors...

Friday for us is Buddy Reading day and you can see some GREAT readers!!:)

Another week is ahead for us in Room 104 so check back with us to find out what we're learning about!:)
