Shining Bright in 2nd Grade:)

This week we were busy bees as we are really getting into our units in each subject.
In reading we practiced summarizing by locating the beginning, middle, and end of the story. We learned how to locate the most important details in order to retell the story. We continued our Cynthia Rylant author study by reading "Poppleton" and summarizing the important events.
Here are some pictures of them retelling a story to a friend using their B-M-E flipbook...

In math we continued our Place Value Unit and learned how to use mental math to add 10 or 100 and subtract 10 or 100. Knowing "where the number lives" (its Place Value) helped us determine which number would change its value. Being a mathematician is hard work, but we have a class filled with students who persevere by using various strategies to solve problems. Here are some pictures of them playing a game where they had to spin a spinner or roll a di to get a three digit number, then their partner had to add 10 and add 100 to the number...

In Science we worked on reviewing the scientific method which is important as we apply that process all year in various research activities and experiments. We also really got into inquiry this week when we answered several "Wonders" from Wonderopolis.org....
They were excited about answering and learning from this Wonder because of our Fireworks Experiment last week. :)
This is a Wonder that really hits close to home because of how often we rely on hand sanitizer at school. They were very intrigued at what we discovered. :)
In Social Studies we began looking at elements of a map that aid in our ability to read a map to locate places or use directions. We practiced moving the correct way for N,S, E, W by playing "Simon Says". :)
We also spent some time on September 11th learning about the significance of that date for our country. They began writing a Thank You card to some of our local heroes...police officers. :) They were so excited about this activity!!
In writing we wrote about "Shining Bright in 2nd Grade". This writing will be displayed on our bulletin board for the month of September. They wrote about a goal that they have for this school year. This also went along with our Habit of the Week...
Here are some pictures of them "Shining Bright". We hope you will come to Open House on Tuesday night to see their writing displayed on our Bulletin Board. :):)
